Why Tree Stump Removal?
You have a stump or two, and you'd like them eliminated. There are numerous reasons why you should.
Tree stumps can be obstructive, damaging (to your garden equipment and your toes), or contaminated by parasites and fungus, and it's not a surprise most people eliminate them from their grounds.
There are a number of methods of Stump Removal, generally described as
- Manual Digging
- Poisoning
- Winching
- Grinding
We will explain each of the approaches below. However, it's safe to state that if you are uncertain which method is best for your garden or commercial area, it's probably best for us to survey the location. In doing so, we can offer some guidance and costing.

Tree Stump Grinding and Stump Removal
If stumps are not totally "dead," they can grow roots and flowers once again. This is called "suckering", and in itself is no bad thing, some people are comfortable allowing the stump to take new life and grow. However, if the stump is truly dead, it is prey to fungi and parasites, and it's typically best to remove it.
If the tree is on the small side or the roots are not too deep, it is physically possible to dig it out. Generally, in this instance, there is no need to call out a Tree Surgeon.
On the assumption that it is deeply embedded or deep-rooted, then three of the options are to
- Leave where it is and use poison. At some point, the tree will rot away.
- Winch it out if the tree has sufficient height and leverage.
- Grind it out, making use of our industrial machinery.
Some of the most prominent poisons we see being used are Stump Killer and Root Tree Killer. They serve well if the appropriate procedures are complied with and the customer is prepared to leave the location for the specified period. As stated earlier, we are not a great fan of using poisons, as there is no guarantee of it working fully. It takes an inordinate amount of time but more importantly, putting toxins into the earth, in our opinion, has too many drawbacks. We can and will utilise the poison if this is the favoured choice.
Winching out a tree has possible pitfalls, and we prefer only to execute this method if the area is clear and there is no risk to anything in the surrounding area. The tree needs to be of a certain height (four feet or more is the norm), and the roots can't be too deeply-rooted. We would certainly need to do a proper survey prior to deciding whether winching is the most suitable option.
Stump grinding, whether by portable or heavy-duty commercial machinery, is the most common technique of stump removal. It's typically faster, reduces the stump to sawdust, and the area can be covered with dirt, soil, and turf immediately. (If there are any residual roots that the grinder cannot reach, then they would usually rot and perish)
Tree stump elimination costs differ depending on size and accessibility.

Common questions about Stump Grinding and Tree Stump Removal
What is the fastest way to remove a tree stump?
A: If not using a Stump Grinder, dig out the area around the stump and using a hand saw or powered saw, sever the main roots from the Stump. When free of all roots, try digging out the stump with a digging bar/crow bar. Failing that and we don't recommend this at all, use a vehicle to pull out the stump taking care that the stump doesn't fly out and hit anything. (We still recommend calling the professionals)
Do it yourself stump removal?
A: Drill a number of regular spaced out 25mm/1 inch holes as deep as you can. Fill the holes with your preferred stump remover. Wait
What is the average cost to remove a tree stump?
A: There is no average cost. It depends on the size of the stump, the access to the stump, whether the stump is to be taken away, whether a machine has to be hired, (not all companies can afford to buy all sizes of grinders for example). Saying all that, our typical costs to date have ranged from £240 to £580.
How long does Epsom salt take to kill a stump?
If salts are reapplied regularly a tree stump should have died within 6-8 weeks. If the wood is not dark and brittle then you need to reapply the salts.
What is the best stump killer?
Most Stump Killers and Root Killers contain Glyphosate. The most common names out there are Jobdone, Roundup and Vitax which seem to get a good name. We don't recommend poison to kill trees if we are perfectly honest but we will do so at the clients request.
Will Roundup kill a tree stump?
Yes
